Neurofeedback in Washington, DC: What to Expect
A session starts with a short conversation about the brain itself, specifically how adaptable it is and why that matters for what comes next. After that, your trainer fits an EEG cap over your scalp and the two of you look at your brainwaves together, reading them off the screen in real time.
From there you get a chance to play with those waves yourself, one state at a time. We usually open with whichever pattern seems to be asking for the most work, and that can be any of the five bands: Delta, Theta, Alpha, Beta, or Gamma. Only once you've shown that you can nudge your own patterns through the system do we move into the actual training, this time with your eyes open.
During the eyes-open portion, you hear sound and watch images that respond to what your brain is doing. The goal is to shift four separate things: absolute amplitude (the raw power of a wave), relative amplitude (its power compared to the other waves), coherence (how well different regions sync up), and asymmetry (the places that are supposed to stay out of sync with each other). Nearly everyone figures out how to influence their own activity inside the first fifteen minutes.
Then you stop. A short rest lets the brain settle and lets the training sink in. Think of it the way you'd think about lifting: hard effort, then recovery, then another round, because the muscle needs the gap to be ready for the next set. Neurofeedback follows the same rhythm of train hard, rest, repeat.
The protocols we run are our own and we don't publish them, which means this exact version of the training isn't available elsewhere in the city. Because we group sessions into bulk blocks, our hourly rate also ends up lower than you might expect.
The project around Neurofeedback in Washington, DC exists to get more people in the District (and well beyond it) familiar with the practice. It's built for a worldwide audience, a place where people can gather and read about a still-young approach to watching, recording, and training brainwaves. The bands we work with are Alpha, Beta, Gamma, Theta, and Delta. Anyone living or working near the capital tends to find this interesting, since the whole point is to pull a global audience into the methods of this century.
Most people come in wanting a fix for whatever is bothering them. That turns out to be hard, and the reason is usually that the underlying skills aren't there yet: holding executive attention, steering your own emotional and mental state, dropping into deep relaxation or climbing into high energy whenever you choose to. For that reason we point people toward learning more about mindfulness, meditation, and neuro-training, which you can reach through the contact details below.
