Defeat Depression with 6 Life-Saving Steps

Depression can swallow your life whole. It pulls you down into a dark, muddy pit that feels like it has no exit, and when you are in it, you probably believe nothing will ever get better. That belief is a lie the illness tells you. There are six steps you can take to stop the slide and start climbing back out.

The first thing to understand is that you cannot do this by yourself. When you are depressed, you tend to bury what you feel. You might force a smile or pretend things are fine, all while you are hurting and convinced that no one really sees you or cares. Your whole inner world is in chaos, and that is exactly the moment you need other people most.

So let others lift you up. Fighting depression alone is dangerous, and the darkness can take over more of your life than you realize. When you lean on people spiritually, mentally, and physically, you give your soul, your mind, and your body a chance to rise out of the dark.

Let them pull you out, too. Carrying the weight and the shame of depression by yourself only drives you deeper. Accepting help is not weakness. When someone reaches in and helps haul you out, they are helping save your life, and there is nothing shameful in that.

The second step is to engage with others. Depression tells you to close the door on everyone. You stop calling friends, stop showing up for family, and start to feel like your life has no point. The way back is to reconnect, because contact with people is what reminds you that you still matter.

Engage so you can feel wanted. Isolation convinces you that the worth you once saw in yourself is gone. It is easy to let that feeling pull you down further, but when you actually open up to people again, you discover the value you thought you lost was still there the whole time. You find out how much people wanted you around.

Engage so you can feel needed, as well. When your life feels flipped upside down, you start believing nobody depends on you anymore and that your existence is meaningless. Reaching out restores the meaning. The same people you pushed away often turn out to love you and need you, and you only find that out once you let them back in.

The third step is to find comfort and understanding in other people. Depression is not a dead-end road, even when it looks like your life is nothing but roadblocks. You feel like you are fighting your demons alone, but you are not. Other people can offer you both solace and genuine empathy.

Accept comfort. Being depressed is a lonely way to live, and the illness tells you that solitude is what you want, when all solitude really does is sink you further. Letting someone sit with you, or hug you, or simply be available, can loosen the grip of that urge to isolate. Comfort from another person can make you feel alive again.

Look for empathy, too. A lot of people have walked through what you are walking through now. Depression does not pick and choose; it is not one-size-fits-all. Someone who has been there can understand what you are feeling and help you through the worst of it. They can stand beside you and fight alongside you when your own willpower and hope have run out.

There is light at the end of this. Depression does not have to win, and it does not have to run your life. You can stop sinking by leaning on people to lift you up and pull you out, by engaging so you feel wanted and needed, and by finding comfort and empathy in others when it seems like there is no hope left.
