Dr. James Hardt Interview Archive

He had been tracking all of it, keeping notes as he went. So when he returned on the second day, still wearing his three-piece suit, he reached into his pocket and unfolded a long list: every person he was angry at. The work had started. That day in the chamber he brought each of them to mind, one by one, moving through forgiveness, and he managed to clear the whole remarkable list.

When someone does that, the traumas locked inside them loosen and release. What follows is closer to freedom. Dr. Hawkins describes this as the aim of letting go, the aim of transcendence, and it is also what Biocybernaut training points toward. That sets it apart from psychotherapy, whose purpose tends to be softer: tend a person's ego so it sits more comfortably alongside other egos. The anger may still be there, the pride may still be there, but the edges have been smoothed enough for the person to get along. That counts as success in therapy.

Transcendence asks for something else. It wants the ego reduced, and if possible dissolved, so that the being, the spirit, the soul, reaches liberation. Biocybernaut has been working to carry people in that direction for many years now. There is a catch worth admitting. Most people cannot get very far toward that goal until they have worked through a sizable backlog of emotional wounds first.

That is a question about time, and I tend not to do well with questions about time.

Ram Dass was one of my teachers. I have listened to his interviews dozens of times, and I think he did a beautiful job of translating the density of Indian psychology, philosophy, yoga, and Buddhism for an educated Western audience. He once put it this way: if you want to live high, you have to live outside of time. That does not mean you can never catch a flight. It means something else.

Erik: Okay, great. Welcome back to the second part of this recording. We lost the connection the first time, but we are back online now. I think the last thing we were discussing was Ram Dass saying that to live in a higher place, a person has to live outside of time. What does that mean? Could you explain it?
